A New Life in Houston

The Bhutanese community is a well-organized group of people from Bhutan who have come to this country to seek a new life free from oppression.  Most live in various Apartment communities in Southwest Houston and for the most part the families are very happy to finally be in the United States even though they understandably continue to have concerns about family members back in the camps.  As far as their new life here in Houston is concerned, to find a job as quickly as possible is the number one concern.  The refugee resettlement organizations give support for a limited period of time and afterwards the refugees must support themselves as best they can.

Imagine yourself in a similar situation.  The families that arrive in Houston oftentimes feel completely overwhelmed by their new surroundings.  They come from a rural country and have lived in refugee camps for nearly two decades and in the case of most of the children, they were born in the camps and the only accommodations they have ever known is a bamboo hut and the company of others who live the same life.  To then be expected to adapt to one of the largest cities in the United States is intimidating and confusing, but they have many resources and organizations that are already in place to lend assistance and gather information from.

Organizations formed to help the Bhutanese

Several groups are already involved in the Bhutanese Community and each has its own specific role to perform.  LOAVES&Fishes is one of those organizations.  We strive to help make the transition into American life easier and to glorify Christ by serving as His emissaries to the Bhutanese community.

There are also many other organizations that work in Houston to help the Bhutanese Community.  Among these are The Canaan Bhutanese Church and The Community Cloth.  LOAVES&Fishes supports and encourages their work and in addition to our News and Information, their current activities can always be found on the Newsletter page.

THE CANAAN BHUTANESE CHURCH

Christians within the Bhutanese community work every day to help their own people and Canaan Bhutanese Church in SW Houston is a thriving place where many people both hear and live out the Gospel of Jesus who fed the multitudes from an insufficient supply.  The Church currently meets at Collge Park Baptist Church Rm. 2 and celebrated it's first year anniversary in January 2010.
